ICC/Heritage Wrestling Recap

This past weekend we got a look at seven district 5 teams.   This tournament had 16 schools and as is the case now many of the tournaments allow

multiple wrestlers from the same school that are at the same weight to compete.    District 5 seemed a bit stronger this year that in the past few years IMO.

Conemaugh Township 107 pounder Charter Christ easily outdistanced the field with a couple tech falls and a pin in the finals.   He looks to return to states and get on the medal stand.   W. Baker from Northern Bedford wrestled his way to the 3rd place spot.   At 114 E. Dutchcot hit the podium with a 3rd place finish.

127 lbs. seen a pair of district 5 wrestlers squared off in the finals match where D. Santamaria (returning state medalist 5th) took on L. Smith of Berlin in a battle where Santamaria won 8-4.  Look for more of these battles this year.   133 saw another Tussey Mountain wrestler K. Husik win a decisive 8-2 match in finals for a first place.  Husik looks to make a deep run this year as well.  At 145 Meyersdale picked up a first-place finish with B Schardt who will make a lot of noise this season.  I look for big things from him.  At 152 we saw B. Durst of Berlin Brothersvalley claimed the third-place spot.   This young man has unlimited potential and could shock anyone at any time.    At 160lbs we got to see another District 5 final with D. Shaffer of Berlin battling C. Sines of Meyersdale and these guys did not disappoint.   I believe both guys will have their post seasons extended and look for both of them at the state tournament this year.   D. Shaffer IMO will break it lose this year.  Coming in at fourth place was N. Dail of Conemaugh Twp.   I would keep an eye on this young man as he is a hardworking, never give up kind of young man and I would not sleep on him as he gets better every time out.   N. Dail came in as the 8th seed.  Coming in at 172 lbs. we see another Meyersdale wrestler in the finals.  C. Porter had a good match and came up a bit short to claim runner up.   189 lbs. was a interesting weight which seen Berlin's C. Durst in the finals dropping a close decision for runner up honors.  C. Durst is a tough young man who puts in the work and should have a fabulous year.   A pair of North Star wrestlers battled in Consi finals with the third-place honor going to K. Yoder and 4th place to teammate B. Galentine.   I imagine that is a match that the teammates didn't really want to wrestle and hopefully as the weight plans shake out, they can find their ways to different weight classes.   I should mention that K. Yoder did not wrestle last year (to my knowledge) however, this young man has always impressed from the time he was young.   Another young man that people should keep an eye on.   215lbs we again see another Meyersdale wrestler in the finals C. Synder who dropped a close decision to gather up runner up honors.   Again, another gifted young athlete with a very high ceiling.   Berlin's S.Kimmel found himself on the podium finishing up in 4th place.  Another tough young man who does not have give up in his vocabulary.

It is worth noting that many D5 wrestlers would have been in the 5th-6th place match however, the tournament did not wrestle those matches.  If I missed anyone or offended anyone please let me know.   I am looking to get more focus on our local wrestlers and programs.  If you have coverage of a match or any news that you may want reported on here please just reach out to the email.   Any and all help to get more coverage and interest for our area would be greatly appreciated

Top 10 Team placements had Berlin 2ec, Meyersdale 6th, Tussey Mountain 9th, CT and Everett tied at 10th
